So, the contest closed a couple days ago. I've entered my cutter book. I entered it under the title Slice. I've changed the name about a million times. Maybe I should just let my readers name by book. Ugh.
I was reminiscing about the contest. This will be my fifth time entering. I've entered a different book every time. First year made it to top 100. Since then, I've made it through the pitch phase and no further.
The last time I entered I got a HORRIBLE review. And I don't mean a constructive review, but just a mean spirited review. I laugh about it now because, hey, I'm a published writer, but at the time I was really pissed at first.
Here are some of my favorite excerpts from that review:
Before I post this one, I will say the reviewer thought I was a teenager, which I took as a compliment (though it wasn't supposed to be) as it meant the voice of my character was right on. lol.
"Unfortunately,
you have failed to pay attention in the one class required to be able to write
well - English."
"It's
a shame that you didn't write anything that hasn't been written hundreds of
times already this year."
Before that year I have never seen any books about a 17 year-old girl who wants to play high school football.
"If
this was a school paper, I'd have to give it an "F".
He's talking about my grammar, word usage, and sentence structure and "much, much more". I honestly don't know what he meant. I know he didn't like some of it because I'm not sure he realized my character was southern, IDK.
"It
is way to easy today for people to get published," O.o really? "and I sincerely hope that you
do not see that as an option. Frankly, this is no where good enough to be
called a "book" and you to be called an "author". Pretty harsh thing to tell someone you think is a teenager.
"To
not have learned the basics of writing and yet expect people to read what you
have written shows no respect at all for your readers."
lol. I just have no idea what to say about that one. I'll add that the other three years I entered the contest, they all commented on what a talented writer I was, I mostly got ousted for violence (content). But I took those reviews gracefully, because they were constructive.
I'm honestly not bitter about this review at all. Like I said, at first I was pissed, and yeah if I would have won the contest, I would have received a publishing contract, but I had 1/5,000 chance. Reviewing is subjective, it's really a crap shoot.
That said, I do think the contest is a great opportunity for unpublished and mid-list authors and that most of the reviewers are very good at what they do. I was just thinking back on the years I'd entered before, remembering all the people I connected with, many of them good friends. It was great fun on the contest forum to chat and share with other writers.
If you've not entered before, it's too late this year, but you should consider it in the future.

Monday Morning Blahg: The Ups and Downs of Writerdom
Some people get my writing, some people don't get my writing.
Sometimes I don't get my writing.
Some days I think I'm brilliant, some days I think I suck.
Some days I can't write a word to save my life, some days I can't stop.
Sometimes writers get not so good reviews and sometimes they get this in their Twitter feed.
"Never Eighteen
is phenomenal! I cried so much; I'm in love with Austin and Kaylee. :)"
Okay, maybe that's only me.
I will say this, coming off a weekend of writerly uncertainty, this comment today made me believe in myself again. Yes, some days I question myself. I think we all do. We wonder if we're good enough, if we have what it takes. I have to keep in mind, someone liked my writing enough to rep it, someone liked it enough to publish it. Not everyone is going to like it. I get that. I have to get over it. I need to focus on the people who do like it to keep going.
The review from the above mentioned commenter will be available May 8th. She's my new BFF (she does not know this yet, ;) )

Sick with Stress
April has been an interesting month for me.

The trip to Disneyland was fun, yet stressful. The stress of travel, crowds, money.
My mother-in-law's birthday was April 8th. She died eight years ago now. I always remember her during this time. First because of her birthday, second because Easter usually falls in April and it was her favorite holiday, and third because she moved into my house and died this time of year also.
And more death. Three. And not that I was too close to those who've passed, but death still leaves its dark mark.
And then there's my birthday. And, shhhhhhh, *whispers* keep this between you and me, but I'm not getting any younger. The back side of 40 now. Where did my youth go?
There are also things about my writing causing me to straddle the cavern between crying and laughing.
And my daughters. Thing one to be exact. Soccer to be perfectly precise. Try outs. Thing two automatically makes
the "C" team as a sixth grader. Thing one had to try out, and while she has the talent, sure as snot, I worry about politics. It's always politics that get in the way of our dreams it seems. In my opinion she was one of the better players on the field all week. She has a strong foot, good moves, she's an awesome passer, and she can shoot and score. But some of the girls were on the team last year (Thing one did not try out much to my chagrin). And some of the girls know the coach from club play. So I worry. I worry that instead of writing today, I will be comforting a very teary teen.

But April often gives me hope for the rest of the year. Gives it new life like the pansies already in full bloom in my back yard, or the hydrangeas coming up in my flower bed. My Ella Bee (my grand niece, what? you sa
y I don't look old enough to have a grand niece? why thank you) turns one tomorrow. She has been a ray of sunshine in my often dark world this year. And I have a new nephew, Levi, born just a couple days ago.
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, no matter who dies, who ages, who mourns, who cries, there is always that tiny bud of life ready to bloom that makes you forget, even if only for a moment, all of it.
Edited to say: One worry crossed of my list as Thing One has made the soccer team. Whew!

Top four things I hate about Twilight. #2 *SPOILER ALERT*

My #2 is Breaking Dawn. While there are things I liked about the book, the series took a turn I really didn't expect, nor did I like.
I was in no way ready for Bella to become a vampire. And really, Bella: Weakest person on the face of the earth = strongest vampire ever. Protector of vampire and human alike. Phllllllltttttttt (that's me giving a raspberry). I bet the werewolves can still kick her ass.
I hate hate hated the whole Bella getting pregnant thing. And I doubly hate hate hate the name Renesme. Stupid stupid stupid.
The other disgustingly gross thing in the book is Jacob imprinting on the stupid baby. Icky. Yuck. Severely dislike. I'm sure I'm not the only one. This had to creep out anyone with a moral bone in their body. Can you say, pedophilia? Blech. Let's just treat Jacob like crap through the entire series and then make him wait eighteen more years for a mate. Jacob needs to find a new set of friends and his own book deal.
I suppose that's it. I'm sure I could come up with more if I really tried, but I'm not sure it's worth the time.
Thanks for reading, come back tomorrow for #1 (I think you can figure out what it is)
Kisses :*

Top four things I hate about Twilight. #4

Okay, so this week I tell you what I DON'T like about Twilight. My #4 is the writing.
While I enjoy the concept of the story, and I appreciate the fact that Stephenie Meyer tries to be very literary at times, it doesn't work for me. Yes, fancy words are pretty to read, but not a novel they do make.
Too much internal conflict with Bella, yeah we get it, you're weird, you're in love with a Vampire, yes, he's the most beautiful person you've ever seen, get on with it already. And she's just some plain no one, yet every boy in school wants her? Um, yes, I get that there's that "new girl" novelty, but someone as plain as Bella is supposed to be would not garner that much attention. Plus the fact that she's a total introvert, and putting off.
The characters are flat and not very interesting. They have no personality whatsoever. The only one with any depth at all is Jacob. Hence why he was included in last weeks blog. And I'm sorry, who in their right mind would not pick Jacob over Edward. He treats Bella with respect, he'd do anything for her, he's hot, he's human, he loves her, he's hot...need I say more? Not until book four (I think) do we get any insight the the vampire back stories. It at least makes Rosalie more interesting, not so much the others.
And Bella is a horrible role model for teenage girls. Constantly being saved by Edward. I mean, really, does someone really almost die that many times? She was very lucky to have a vampire boyfriend and a werewolf best friend. er. And really, putting everything in your life aside for a guy? A dead guy who seriously doesn't treat you that good? A guy who treats Bella like a possession and is borderline stalker (yeah, I come in your room and watch you sleep every night, can you say, creepy?). A guy who when he leaves you, you just want to die. Yes, this is not a good lesson for today's female youth.
Okay, I guess that's it for today. Come back tomorrow for my number three.
Kisses :*
Megan
