David Bowie is Dead

Normally this day would be reserved for my newly launched Monday Bullshit Sessions, but in lieu of David Bowie's death, I've changed course.

My oldest sister, Dana, has always loved Bowie. She followed him from the very beginning of his career, which was the year I was born, so I grew up surrounded by all things Bowie until my sister moved out. I was a fan.

There were years I really didn't understand him and his music, and some of his musical phases didn't really appeal to me, but no matter, his performances and ever-changing styles were always mesmerizing.

He became a bit more mainstream in the 80s with his Let's Dance Album. It was the height of my Let's Dance album, my favorites were always Space Oddity, Changes, and Heroes.

That tour was also the first and only Bowie concert I would witness. Dana and I went together. It was an amazing experience.

Since then, he's always been somewhere in the background, on the car radio, a whistle in the shower, a karaoke song...it wasn't until my second daughter Rachel was born and watching movies that Bowie made another appearance in my life. Rachel's dad suggested we all watch Labyrinth. Admittedly, I had never seen the movie before then, around the year 2000. When it first came out I was too busy watching movies like 16 Candles, Better Off Dead and Breakfast Club.

Labyrinth became Rachel's favorite movie. She watched it her first time around three years old, and she still watches it to this day at age 18. In fact, I'm pretty sure she just watched it last weekend. She is now a huge Bowie fan.

One thing that stands out about Bowie and wife Iman, is that they weren't whores to the paparazzi. For the most part, they stayed out of the drama that can come with stardom and the spotlight altogether.

I'm saddened by the news of his death. He made a huge impact on the music world, and made his mark in film and theater as well. Bowie was a man of innovation, style and class. His spirit will be missed.

F³A: Facebook Timeline

I don't get it.  I mean, didn't we have changes just like yesterday?  And now Mark Zuckerburg is changing it up again? *shakes fists at MZ*  

When I started Facebook I liked it because it was simple.  So splash.  No bells and whistles.  No tiny little boxes everywhere to mess you up.  I knew where things were.  It's kind of like someone going into your office and rearranging everything.  I'm like, WTF?  Where are my friends? Where are my statuses? Where is my sanity?  Oh, there it is, in a little box in the bottom left hand corner.

It's my own fault.  I decided to try it out.  I can play with it for seven days of publish it right away.  If I don't publish it myself they do it for me.

but Idon'twanna.  I want to go back to the way it was where everything was listed  neatly and simply on the left.  Where my friends were stacked like the Brady Bunch on the left.  Where that stupid scrolling whatsit that I finally got used to was on the upper right, and my chat the lower right, and all my shit was right in the middle.  Now everything is scattered everywhere and I can't find a damn thing.

So, does anyone know how I can go back?  CAN I even go back or should I just keep it because eventually we're going to be FORCED to have it?

Book of the Week:  I'm reading my friend Ian Healy's Just Cause.  You like superheroes?  Check this book out.

Netflix of the Week: Gray's Anatomy.  I like it.  I'm on season two.  The vet just came in.  He's hot.  I think it's Chris O'Donnell, but I haven't seen him since like 1989 so I'm not sure.

Happy Friday!

Ch-ch-ch-changes...

This isn't really about David Bowie, it's about me.  As always.  Because I'm a narcissist.

Change.  I fear it but sometimes it's inevitable.  Now that I'm getting published (fingers crossed nothing bad happens to prevent this), I really do need to make some changes in my life.

1) My video series is going from Chronicles of an Aspiring Writer to Chronicles of a Debut Novelist.  I'm having a meeting with a musician and his girlfriend for a new theme song (okay it's my friend Kristin and her boyfriend Tony, but I can write it off if I make it sound important, right?)

2) I have joined the Elevensies group.  I'm very excited about it.  I love the idea of writers helping other writers succeed in this business.  And Gae's in it and it is going to be so cool to work with her!!!

3) And, er, exercise.  I was supposed to start my regiment this week, but, uh, sigh, I didn't.  But if I need to get author photos and do book signings I want to be fit. (okay, I want to look hawt, I can't help it, it's the narcissist in me)

4) I need to organize my time better, so, I'm going to start keeping a calendar and write down everything that needs to be done on any given day.  I've tried this before, but I'm determined to make it work.  Daily stuff like balancing my time with exercise, writing, networking.  Then things that would be more of a weekly or monthly thing like like videos, critique groups, etc.

I'm sure I'll come across some other things that I need to work on or change, but that's where I'm starting right now.
